| PRIVATE Private instruction is designed to provide students with the highest quality of teaching in a fun and rewarding atmosphere. Lessons are available to individuals ages five through adult, from beginning to advanced in 30, 45, or 60 minute intervals, in the following: Recording / Composition / Accompanying / Music Theory Piano / Voice Violin / Viola / Cello / Double Bass Bassoon / Oboe / Saxophone / Flute / Clarinet Trumpet / Horn / Trombone / Euphonium (Baritone) / Tuba Banjo / Mandolin / Acoustic Guitar / Electric Guitar / Electric Bass Drums / Mallets / Percussion SEMI-PRIVATE INSTRUCTION Semi-private lessons are available to two students of similar proficiency levels who prefer a shared learning experience. Placement must be discussed with desired instructor prior to enrollment. SMALL ENSEMBLES/CLASSES Students studying privately or semi-privately also have the opportunity to augment their learning experience with an ensemble or class of 4-7 students, to apply or supplement the skills learned in the private and semi-private training. CAMPS AND FIELD TRIPS Week-long summer camps, year-round weekend camps, and holiday camps are available for students of all ages, structured around musical themes and areas of study (Brass Camp, Petting Zoo Camp, Early Childhood Education Camp - blue note kids Camp, Special Needs Camp, Teamwork Band Camp, Guitar Camp, Beginner Banjo Camp, etc.). Brochures are made available upon request after camps are scheduled. Public and private school field trips to The Music Academy are available, which include demonstrations and master classes by MANC faculty and students. PARTNERSHIPS The Music Academy partners with private and public schools, colleges and universities, and community organizations to provide individually-tailored high-quality musical opportunities to meet the varying needs within each collaboration. Offerings include after-school enrichment, school and college credit, master classes, demonstrations, workshops, and performing series. | | | | Overview | | | | CLASSICAL/TRADITIONAL Traditional/classical music lessons are available in voice and all instrumental areas, whereby students are introduced to the standard techniques and literature of their chosen area of focus. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION - blue note kids (click here for current schedule and prices) blue note kids is an educational program for the very young child featuring the newest programs from leaders in the field of early childhood music. These programs foster creativity, social development, and an understanding of musical concepts. The Music Academy's age-specific programs provide the opportunity for joyful interaction among parent, teacher, and children on the highest level. Classes are offered for children from birth through 8 years. They emphasize the development of vocal skills, fine and large motor coordination, focused listening, and instrument playing; all critical to the development of the whole child and laying the foundation for later-formal music instruction. Through the use of high quality home materials, the programs also provide opportunities for families to continue the musical experience in the home. The Music Academy of North Carolina offers the complete Musikgarten curriculum: Family Music for Babies (up to 15 months), Family Music for Toddlers (15 months to 3 years), Cycle of Seasons (3 to 5 years), and Music Makers (4-1/2 with prior musical experience or 5 years of age and up). Making Music Together Ensemble (grades 1 and 2) includes movement and use of Orff rhythm instruments and recorder with basic choral techniques and simple 2-part singing. Other Early Childhood classes are not prerequisites, but some advanced Early Childhood techniques may be used. blue note kids Flute Program (7 years of age and up) will give young players and beginners the highest quality instruction. Students learn at a very young age to play the "real" flute (Suzuki curved flute) by rote, much as they learned to speak. Individual assessments are required before the child is accepted as a student. blue note kids String Program (3-1/2 years of age and up) teaches children to play as they learned to speak, through repetition and listening to others. The traditional method is introduced as the instructor deems appropriate. Lessons are taught with a caregiver in attendance. Individual assessments are required before the child is accepted as a student. blue note kids Piano Program (4 years of age and up) teaches children to play as they learned to speak, through repetition and listening to others. These classes are a fun, affordable alternative to summer camp. FOLK/BLUEGRASS (Banjo, Guitar, Fiddle, and Mandolin) Folk/bluegrass banjo, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin lessons are geared toward the beginner and intermediate levels. Banjo lessons are taught using the 3 finger Scruggs' style to learn classic Bluegrass songs. JAZZ Beginning student combos are for middle school, high school and adult students in small classes of 4 to 7. Chord symbols, modes, jazz theory, styles and listening are included. A minimum of 1 year traditional study is required. Performance Combos are for high school and adult students in small ensembles of 4 to 7. Instrumentation is limited. Faculty recommendation and continuing private jazz instruction required. Jazz Private instruction is available to piano, winds, brass, bass, guitar, vocal, and percussion students. Concepts include listening, jazz theory, interpreting chord symbols, modes, styles, and musicianship. Jazz Piano is for middle school, high school, and adult students interested in interpreting symbols into comping chords, improvisations, walking or bossa bass lines in small groups of 4 to 7. Private instruction for advanced students only. A minimum 4 years traditional study is required. Jazz masterclass is an open forum with faculty, student combos and guest artists performing. Discussions of and about music are open to all present. POP Popular music selections and styles are available for the hobby and recreational musician. ROCK MUSIC Classic or Modern Rock, Blues, Ska, and Reggae ensembles are available to keyboard, vocal, guitar, bass, and percussion students. Instruction in piano/keyboard may begin for students as young as 3 years old. Voice - Members of the voice faculty have outstanding credentials and years of diverse performing and teaching experience to offer the best in classical/traditional and musical theater instruction. Instructors are eager to assist beginning young adult students, students with special needs, students preparing for auditions and competitions, and students who hope to make music a career. Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion - Outstanding credentials and years of diverse performing and teaching experience combine to offer the best in private and ensemble musical training for classical/traditional, rock, Latino, and jazz enthusiasts. Instructors are eager to assist beginning students, students with special needs, students preparing for auditions and competitions, and students who hope to make music a career. Orchestral Strings - Outstanding credentials and years of diverse performing and teaching experience offer the best in violin, viola, cello, and double bass musical training.
